Term Life Insurance, Explained
What it is, what it is not, how long to buy, and the five things that set your price.

Term life insurance pays a fixed, income-tax-free death benefit to your beneficiaries if you die during a set term — commonly 10, 20 or 30 years — in exchange for a level monthly premium. It has no cash value, which is why it costs a fraction of whole life for the same coverage. Most policies can be converted to permanent coverage within a window, and many carriers now issue up to $1,000,000 without a medical exam for qualifying applicants.
What You Are Buying
A promise: if you die during the term, the carrier pays the face amount to the people you name. If you outlive the term, coverage ends (or renews year-to-year at much higher rates) and nothing is paid — that is the trade that makes it cheap. The premium is guaranteed level for the full term at nearly every carrier in our library.
Included At Most Carriers
- Level premium for the whole term
- Accelerated death benefit for terminal illness (often up to 50–90% of the face amount)
- Conversion to permanent coverage without a new exam, inside a window (for example, Fidelity Life allows conversion through the 5th anniversary on 10-year terms and the 10th on 15-year-plus terms)
- A free-look period to cancel for a full refund — 10 days minimum in most states, 30 at some carriers (Fidelity Life gives 30)
Optional Riders Worth A Look
- Child rider: $5,000–$25,000 per child for a few dollars a month
- Waiver of premium if you become disabled
- Living benefits for chronic illness (some carriers include it at no extra premium; others charge)
- Return of premium — be careful: it can double the price for a refund you could have invested yourself
Choosing The Length
Buy the term that covers the obligation. The years until your youngest child is self-supporting; the remaining years on the mortgage; the years until retirement savings can carry your spouse. If two obligations end at different times, two policies ("laddering") often cost less than one long one.

What Sets Your Price
Age
The single biggest factor. Rates rise every birthday and jump at the decade marks; buy the term you will need now rather than later.
Tobacco & Nicotine
Any nicotine in the last 12 months (including vaping and patches at most carriers) moves you to tobacco rates, often two to three times the non-tobacco price for the same age.
Health Class
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard, Standard Extra and "table" ratings. Blood pressure, cholesterol, build (height/weight), family history, driving record and hazardous hobbies all feed the class.
Amount & Term
Longer terms and larger amounts cost more, but the price per $1,000 falls as the face amount rises — $500,000 is usually far less than twice $250,000.
Sex
Women pay less than men of the same age and class because of longer life expectancy (except in Montana, which requires unisex rates).
The Carrier
Every carrier prices the same person differently. One may forgive a controlled condition another rates. That is the whole reason to quote across carriers.
Term Vs Everything Else
| Need | Term | Whole life | Guaranteed issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace income while kids are young | Best fit | Costly for the amount | Too small ($25,000 caps) |
| Lifetime coverage / estate | Ends at term | Best fit | Small, graded |
| Serious health history | May be rated or declined | Underwritten | No health questions |
| Cash value | None | Yes, grows slowly | Minimal |
| Cost for $500,000 at 35 | Lowest | Many times term | Not offered at that size |
