What is term life insurance?
Coverage for a set period — commonly 10, 20 or 30 years — that pays a death benefit only if you die during the term, in exchange for a level premium. It has no cash value, which keeps it inexpensive. Most policies can be renewed at higher premiums or converted to permanent coverage (NAIC Life Insurance Buyer's Guide).
How much does term life insurance cost?
A healthy 30-year-old man is quoted about $213 a year ($500,000, 20-year, Preferred) and a woman about $182; at 40 it is roughly $321 / $278, at 50 about $810 / $636, at 60 about $2,335 / $1,640 (NerdWallet, Oct 2026). Roughly three-quarters of consumers overestimate the cost (2026 Insurance Barometer).
How much coverage do I need?
Enough to cover the financial needs that continue after your death (NAIC). Two starting points: 10× income, or DIME — debts + income replacement + mortgage + education, minus savings. 47% of households say they would feel the impact within six months of losing the primary earner (2026 Barometer).
Term or whole life?
Term buys the most coverage per dollar for a period; whole life is permanent, builds cash value and costs many times more for the same death benefit. Term accounted for about 17% of new premium but far more policies by count in Q2 2026 (LIMRA).
What term length should I choose?
Match the longest obligation — the mortgage, or the years until your youngest is independent. Lengths run 10 to 40 years; 35- and 40-year terms are sold by Banner Life, Protective, Corebridge and William Penn for younger applicants.
Can I get term life with no medical exam?
Yes, through accelerated underwriting at standard rates when your records check out: Legal & General America to $4M, Ethos to $3M, Foresters to $2M (ages 18–60), Fidelity Life InstaBrain to $1M. Issuance may still depend on your health answers, and an exam may be requested.
How fast can I be approved?
Minutes to hours for qualifying applicants at instant-decision carriers (Ethos says as little as 10 minutes; Banner within a few hours); traditional underwriting with an exam takes two to twelve weeks (NAIC).
What happens when my term ends?
Coverage expires with no payout unless you renew (annual premiums rise sharply) or convert to permanent coverage before the carrier's deadline.
Can I convert term to permanent coverage?
Most carriers allow conversion within a defined window without new underwriting — for example Fidelity Life allows it through the 5th anniversary on 10-year terms and the 10th on 15-year-plus terms. Check your policy's deadline.
Is the term life death benefit taxable?
No. Proceeds received as a beneficiary because of the insured's death are not included in gross income (IRC §101(a)); interest paid on delayed proceeds is taxable (IRS).
Does vaping count as smoking?
At most carriers, yes — nicotine from any source is rated as tobacco, and labs detect cotinine. Twelve months nicotine-free is the usual threshold for non-tobacco rates; some carriers require longer.
What is the contestability period?
Two years from issue during which the insurer can void the policy for material misstatements on the application. Most policies also limit the benefit to premiums paid if death is by suicide within the first two years (one year in a few states).
What is a free-look period?
A window — 10 days minimum in most states, 30 in some and for most replacements — to return the policy for a full refund. Fidelity Life's InstaBrain policies give 30 days.
Is the life insurance from my job enough?
Usually not: employer coverage is often one to five times salary and may not follow you when you leave (NAIC). Portability windows are typically 31 days, and ported premiums rise with age.
What are living benefits?
Riders that pay part of the death benefit early for terminal illness (life expectancy typically 6–24 months), chronic illness (loss of two activities of daily living or severe cognitive impairment) or critical illness. Terminal-illness riders usually carry no premium charge; Fidelity Life's InstaBrain term includes terminal (up to 90%) and chronic (up to 50%) accelerations at no extra premium where available.
